Sleep Supplement Safety and Interactions
"Natural" does not mean risk-free. Supplements can interact with medicines, and unlike medicines, they do not need FDA approval before they are sold.[NIH Office of Dietary Supplements]
Supplements with notable cautions
- Melatonin: trials mostly use 0.5 to 5 mg; many products contain more, and labels are often inaccurate.[PubMed][PubMed] Keep it away from children.[PubMed] Long-term safety has not been established.[NCCIH]
- 5-HTP and L-tryptophan: do not combine with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, triptans, tramadol or other serotonergic drugs without a doctor (serotonin syndrome risk).[PubMed] Contaminated tryptophan was linked to an outbreak of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome in 1989 to 1990.[PubMed]
- Valerian root: do not combine with alcohol or sedatives; rare liver injury has been reported, mostly with other herbs.[NCCIH]
- Magnesium (glycinate, threonate): NIH upper limit 350 mg a day from supplements for adults; higher risk with kidney disease; can reduce absorption of some antibiotics.[NIH Office of Dietary Supplements]
- Chamomile: allergy risk in people sensitive to ragweed or daisies; reported interactions with warfarin.[NCCIH]
- Passionflower: not for use in pregnancy; may add to the effect of anesthesia or sedatives.[NCCIH]
- Lavender oil capsules: may cause stomach upset or headache, and might add to the effect of sedatives.[NCCIH]
Combining several sleep aids
Many owner comments describe stacking several sedating products. Combining supplements with each other, with alcohol, or with sleep or anxiety medicines can add up; ask a pharmacist before you do.
